AVID MISSION

WE ARE AVID!

Our Reagan staff encourages, teaches and reinforces academic behaviors such as organization, study skills, communication, and self-advocacy. Our AVID scholars develop the academic habits they will need to be successful in middle school, high school, and onward in an age-appropriate and challenging way.

No one can predict the future, but we believe that all students can be prepared to thrive in the world that awaits them.

The strong college-going culture on our AVID Elementary site encourages ALL students to think about their college and career plans. You will notice college pennants and banners around our campus, and teachers speak about their higher level learning experiences. College and careers become common topics and teachers provide the academic foundation students need to be on a path for life-long learning success.

We are so proud to be one of the few elementary schools that have joined the AVID community and are so inspired by how it is helping all of our students become successful, forward thinking learners!

AVID AT A GLANCE

COMPONENTS OF AVID ELEMENTARY

During each stage of learning, AVID Elementary incorporates:

Student Success Skills - encompassing communication skills (e.g. listening, speaking, writing), self-advocacy skills, and study skills.

Organizational Skills - both mental and physical; students are given organizational tools, as well as time management, goal-setting, and note-taking strategies.

WICOR Lessons and L-WICOR Lessons - emphasize instruction on writing to learn, inquiry, collaboration, organization and reading to learn in all content areas.

Partnerships - among students, classrooms, grade levels, schools, feeder patterns, families and communities.

AVID STUDENT EXPECTATIONS

Students in grades 3-5 are expected to have their AVID binder organized according to AVID guidelines which are taught by their teacher in class. They should bring their AVID binder to school and home everyday. Agendas should be signed nightly by an adult who reviews with the student what they did that day and the assignments, tests, projects, or quizzes that they may have coming up. Binder checks are performed informally throughout the year and formally a few times a year. Students in grades TK- 2 are provided with folders that should be brought to and from school daily. Students should be showing a parent/guardian daily the important information in their folders.

AVID ESSENTIALS

AVID Essentials ensure quality and consistency as a transformational system. This systemic approach is founded with an explicit focus on high expectations and rigor to develop a college readiness culture. AVID Elementary Essentials focuses on these four necessary areas to ensure that all students are poised for academic success.

COSTA'S LEVELS OF QUESTIONING

To better understand the content that our Regal Eagle's are being asked in their core subject areas, it is essential for students to learn to think critically and to ask higher levels of questions. By asking higher levels of questions, students deepen their knowledge and create connections to the material being presented. Students need to be familiar with Costa's Levels of Thinking to assist them in formulating higher levels of questions.

AVID SUPPLIES

One of the key components of AVID is Organization. In order to be successful a student needs to be organized. Ronald Reagan provides all of the supplies that students need to be successful AVID Scholars.

Below is a list of supplies that are provided to the students at Ronald Reagan. All students in grade TK - 1 will be provided a folder to provide school/home communication. All students in grade 2 - 5 will be provided:

  • Lined Paper

What does AVID looks like at home?

Parents can:

• Show interest in your student’s progress.

• Talk to your student about school.

• Be aware of your student's classes and his/her performance in each.

• Praise your student's strengths, and help him/her find ways to improve in areas of weakness.

• Ask to look at your student's binder.

• Review your student's tutorial request forms to see what kinds of questions he/she is asking in class.

• Be enthusiastic and supportive. Your student's participation in AVID will keep them motivated and excited about reaching the goal of attending a four-year college or university.
